Northwest Christian University Overview:

Northwest Christian University is a Christian, private, liberal-arts, comprehensive University closely affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ – approximately 15% of NCU’s students are from these two church bodies. Northwest Christian University also has an ecumenical interest and offers its resources to students and congregations of many church traditions.  These students are affiliated with denominational and non-denominational groups, such as Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist, Foursquare, Lutheran, Nazarene, Episcopal, Assembly of God, Catholic, and Community Churches. The University was founded in 1895 and is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.  Located in the city of Eugene, Oregon - population 145,000 (one hour from the Coast, one hour from the Cascade Mountains, ninety minutes south of Portland). Northwest Christian University enrolls an undergraduate and graduate student body of 500 students (150 residential). Northwest Christian University was most recently ranked by U.S. News and World Report fifteen overall among forty comprehensive Colleges in the Western Region.  This is an exciting time in NCU’s history with the University planning for enrollment growth, additional buildings, and renovations.

 

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will have expertise in Christian Ministry studies and be able to provide effective leadership for the Christian Ministry major.  S/he will teach ministry courses in the General Education core, as well as in the major, and ideally will demonstrate expertise in at least one of the following areas: pastoral leadership; youth ministry; missions; homiletics; Christian education/spiritual formation; children’s and family ministries.  S/he will have a strong record of effective service and leadership, as well as experience in teaching ministry courses at the higher education level.  The position involves advising and mentoring students in the program and assisting them in further vocational and educational pursuits.  This position requires the ability to teach a variety of courses in the School of Christian Ministry including some lower division Bible courses.

 

Position Duties and Responsibilities

General for all Faculty:

Maintain a full time teaching load (or equivalent) as described in the Faculty Handbook and as assigned by the dean of your school.

 

As a ‘teacher-scholar’ actively engage with students in collaborative research and learning activities.

 

Provide a solid model of ethical leadership.

 

Maintain and post regular office hours, not less than 8 hours per week.

 

Attend all regular and special faculty meetings.

 

Serve on faculty committees, as assigned by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty within Faculty Handbook guidelines.

 

File updated course syllabi for all courses you teach each semester.

 

Complete embedded course assessment and/or program assessment activities, as required.

 

Facilitate the evaluation of each of your classes each semester and contribute to the evaluation of the curriculum and instruction, ensuring the delivery of quality academic programs.

 

Contribute to development of library resources in area of teaching expertise.

 

Participate in academic advising, as assigned.

 

Follow the current Faculty Handbook as it pertains to faculty roles and responsibilities.

 

Interact with the Registrar’s office in transcript evaluation and recording of student progress, as required.

 

Actively participate in marketing of the programs as well as forming partnerships with colleagues and students where appropriate.

 

Contribute to the integration of faith and learning by addressing this issue in class and in curriculum standards.

 

Provide leadership for the student Ministry Club and other extracurricular activities that promote student engagement with issues and opportunities in practical ministries.

 

Represent the Christian Ministry program at local and regional church gatherings and engage with area churches and ministers, as appropriate.

 

Fulfill any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

 

Experience and Qualification Requirements:

D.Min. or other appropriate terminal degree from an accredited institution, along with a record of successful ministerial leadership in a local congregation or other appropriate setting.  A record of higher education teaching experience in Christian Ministry is required and experience in teaching lower division Biblical studies is strongly desired. The candidate must have a strong familiarity with the Stone-Campbell heritage of NCU, while at the same time demonstrate an ecumenical commitment to provide mentorship and training for students from diverse denominational backgrounds for ministry in their respective church bodies.  The candidate must have current membership and be actively engaged in a local congregation.

 

Ability to utilize Windows based software including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.  Experience utilizing email for the purposes of organizational communications.  Listening skills and the ability to speak and write clearly are essential to the position. Individual must possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
